Curating as Art Practice and Politics

Laima Kreivytė is an artist and curator based in Vilnius. 1999–2000 she studied gender and culture at the Central European University, Budapest. Currently she teaches at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and works on her artist PhD entitled “Curating as Art Practice and Politics”. Kreivytė has published her texts in a number of art papers, magazines, exhibition catalogues, scientific editions. She was an editor of the visual arts section of the cultural newspaper Literatūra ir menas (Literature and Art) 7 meno dienos (7 Days of Art).

Kreivytė has curated a number of exhibitions both in Lithuania and abroad. In 2007 she co-curated Baltic Mythologies exhibition in the 3rd Prague Biennale. In 2009 Kreivytė was a curator of Lithuanian pavilion in 53rd Venice Biennale (presenting Žilvinas Kempinas). She has also curated four exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art in Vilnius: Woman’s Time. Sculpture and Film; Marija Teresė Rožanskaitė. X-Rays; Kęstutis Zapkus. Painting retrospective and M/A\G/M\A. Body and Words in the Works of Italian and Lithuanian Women Artists, also shown in National Centre for Graphic Arts in Rome. Her recently curated projects include Coming or Going? at Kaunas Biennial and Women on the Moon in Klaipėda Culture Communication Center. In 2018 She has participated in the residency exchange program between Nida Art Colony and MASS Alexandria (Egypt).

In 2019 Kreivytė co-curated the new hanging of permanent collection of The National Gallery of Art in Vilnius. In 2018 Kreivytė was awarded Government Prize for Culture and Arts for her work as independent curator and writer. Laima Kreivytė is a founding member of the artists collective Cooltūristės. Their main artistic principle is mis(s)appropriation and institutional critique.
