Approaching the exhibition as research site: Some preliminaries
Nick Aikens’ practice encompasses curating, editing, writing and teaching. He is research curator at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (since 2012) where he leads the Deviant Practice research programme. His recent research project under the title ‘The Place is Here’ focused on the 1980s in Britain and included a series of exhibitions (Van Abbemuseum, Nottingham Contemporary, South London Gallery, Middlesborough Museum of Modern Art, 2016-18) followed by a publication The Place is here: The Work of Black Artists in 1980s Britain (Sternberg Press, 2019). He is a PhD candidate at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg (since 2018). His research project has the working title ‘Practice-led research into the constructs of nationalisms and internationalism operative in political imaginaries in sites within the art system: The 1990s and the present’. He is a member of the editorial board for L’Internationale Online (since 2013) where he recently co-edited the e-publication Living with Ghosts: Legacies of Colonialism and Fascism (L’Internationale online, 2019). He has been a tutor at the Dutch Art Institute (2013-19) and the Design Academy Eindhoven (2015-17).
