
Saber “Rezgar” Alipanah is an artist of Kurdish Iranian descent working across multiple media. He resided in Iraq and Turkey prior to settling in Sweden in 1993. He achieved a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Art in Tehran, Iran, and studied at Domens Konstskolan and Folkskolan for drama och bild in Gothenburg. He has also worked as an art educator at Mångkulturella Folkhögskolan in Gothenburg.
In 2013, Alipanah was accorded the Angered Culture Prize, conferring recognition of his artistic accomplishments and commitment to local cultural life. He also received the Västra Götalands Bildningsförbund ‘Folkbildarpris of the Year’ in 2018. Alipanah’s artistic endeavours have been featured in Sweden as well as across the Middle East.
Also, in 2013, Alipanah initiated a participatory artistic project known as ‘The Mosaikfabriken’ in Hammarkullen, Gothenburg. Working in tandem with various guest artists he provides creative guidance to the participants as they create mosaics which are subsequently installed in the residential public areas and other public spaces. 10,000 participants have contributed to r 4,000 square meters of mosaic art in Gothenburg and the surrounding Västra Götaland region.
About the work: Alipanah has devoted his artistic practice to bringing communities together through art creation, recognition of accomplishments, and meaningful participation in cultural life. Through his work, he is providing platforms for individuals of all ages, ethnicities, and genders to express their creativity and connect on a deeper level with each other. In the Mosaikfabriken project he is highlighting the importance of collaboration, community engagement, and the power of creative expression. Alipanah also owns a studio in Gothenburg, where he has been producing artworks in the form of paintings and mosaics.
The current exhibition features figures such as Rumi, the renowned Iranian poet; Astrid Lindgren, a beloved Swedish author of children’s literature; Mahsa Jina Amini, a Kurdish girl whose death sparked the most massive protests Iran has seen for a generation; as well as Khodanoor Lejei, an Iranian protester from Zahedan who was killed during the 2022 Zahedan massacre, a demonstration that was part of the Mahsa Amini protests.
