Shared session with
“Curating and Commissioning Public Art”
University of Gothenburg
In this shared session we introduce the question of curating, the curatorial and “making public” as a curatorial theme. We will look at some of the key concepts in curating and how these intersect (or not) with concepts and ideas prominent in public art commissioning. We will also consider the way curatorial platforms in different “post-Socialist” spaces have engaged these themes and the contested characterisation of territories through geopolitical frames of East/West and “Former-“/”Transition”/”Post-” etc.
We also introduce some approaches to study of exhibitions & exhibition-making in curatorial studies, and think about the changing tensions between “exhibitionary” art and “public” art, from the perspective of changes in curatorial discourse and practice.
